Golfview

Golfview, Gainesville, Florida

Golfview

This historic neighborhood features single-family homes, the majority built from the early 1930s to mid-1960s. Many houses overlook the University of Florida golf course and are within walking distance of the law school, main campus, Ben Hill Griffin Stadium and Lake Alice. The streets in Golfview have rolling hills and large shading oak trees.

This neighborhood was developed by James Howard Parrish and Mercer Moornam Parrish of the Inter-Southern Life Insurance Company when Gainesville’s population began to grow and the city started to expand westward from the downtown and university area. Golfview has 85 homes. Golfview, like several other historic neighborhoods, is home to several multi-generational families.  The Mark Bostick Golf Course, now owned by the University of Florida, originally opened in 1922 as the Gainesville Golf and Country Club.

In 2016 Golfview was the subject of an interdisciplinary design studio at the University of Florida, including architecture, landscape architecture, and building construction students. The studio resulted in the book titled Golf View Neighborhood Infrastructure.
