Lincoln Estates, Gainesville Florida

Lincoln Estates

Lincoln Estates, named after President Abraham Lincoln, was conceived by the Emmer Development Corporation as a neighborhood where African Americans could enter the housing market during the era of the Civil Rights movement. The community was built in 5 sections between 1960 and 1978, and contains about 600 homes. The community drew national attention as a model for equitable access to home ownership.

It is bounded by SE 15th Street on the west, SE 7th/8th Avenue on the north, SE 20th Street on the east and SE 13th/15th Avenue on the south.  Williams Elementary School and Lincoln Middle School are located adjacent to the neighborhood.  Lincoln Middle School was previously Lincoln High School and served the African American community before school integration.  Lincoln Park sits between Williams Elementary and Lincoln Middle School and the T. B. McPherson Recreation Complex is located just southeast of the neighborhood.

The swimming pool at the T. B. McPherson Recreation Complex is named after Judge Stephan Mickle’s father, Andrew Mickle, Sr. who taught generations of African Americans how to swim.
